Modern Convenience: Luminous Object I & II

Arrow Gallery, Athens
Molded acrylic, stainless steel

The design and concept for this work began as hand-drawn images on graph paper and notations/measurements written in pen on my hand. These were then realized in Auto CAD. I also used as a sketchbook, Hasbro's Lite Brite to help work out a variety of geometric designs possible in a luminous pegboard.

I had been researching injection plastic mold manufacturers on the Internet for quite some time. I was lucky to find Durden Enterprises located nearby in Auburn GA. Durden built an aluminum mold that handled heat injected melted acrylic that was then cooled with water. One piece came out every 40 seconds.

The color palette originated from a PMS guide and transferred into an acrylic color chart. The colorant supplier ended up from Social Circle GA, Standridge Color. The color comes in a pellet like form that is mixed with a base and vacuumed up into the mold machinery.

Each plastic form was individually buffed at 2 per minute in the Metal Shop at UGA. All these processes will be viewable on an edited video that I am taping and producing. The stainless steel "pegboards" were laser cut locally by Don and Yasna Cope.
