UPHOLSTERY, a one person exhibition by Didi Dunphy

POST is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Los Angeles based artist Didi Dunphy at POST wilshire. After years of wall bound work encompassing a variety of domestic techniques including tie-dye, quilting and embroidery, Dunphy has taken on the world of free standing sculpture through the means of upholstered objects. These mini-monumental forms are derived from the generalization of the giant, theatrical masculine works of Post War American sculpture. Again, using a scale reduction to suggest doll furniture and play blocks, ottomans and armrests, these sculptures cut to the quick of household accessibility. The color palette is the game of choice from outside the world of art; somewhere between the retail outlet, Toys R Us, the architect firm Chiat Day, and the new imac line. As the title of the show indicates, the sculpture is upholstered in a cushy foam covered with vinyl naugahide, a fabric that is resilient, as the outdoor use of steel, to the wilds of life such as the spillage of red wine.
